Game Basics

Baccarat is a relatively basic and easy card game where participants place bets and watch the action unfold. Different from Blackjack, a player in baccarat are not required to make decisions during the game, but only before the hand is dealt. A combination of luck, still and strategy online baccarat has become one of the more popular online games which you can now find at the online casinos which are springing up.

What is surprising is that today, Baccarat is most popular in the far east and especially in Hong Kong. Baccarat has a large amount of appeal to gamblers, and is difficult to determine exactly what that draw is for each player. Generally considered to be a glamorous game with high limits, played in an elegant setting, there are three accepted variants of the game: baccarat chemin de fer or railway, baccarat banque or à deux tableaux), and punto banco or North American baccarat). Mini-baccarat is essentially the same game, but played at a smaller table very similar to a blackjack table. The traditional form of punto banco baccarat is played at an oval table, similar to the chemin de fer version. In Baccarat Chemin de Fer, it will have been noticed that a given bank only continues so long as the banker wins.

Rules

The rules as to turning up with eight or nine, offering and accepting cards, and so on, are the same as at Baccarat Chemin de Fer. The rules of baccarat are really easy to learn and although there are a few different variations including American baccarat, Chermin de Fer and European baccarat. After two cards have been dealt, a third card may or may not be dealt to either or both the player and the dealer depending on the rules. In baccarat, the decision of whether to deal a third card is made according to certain unchangeable rules, which the computer follows automatically.

In Baccarat, cards 2-9 are worth face value, 10's and face cards (J, Q, K) are worth zero, and Aces are worth 1 point.

Players calculate their score by taking the sum of all cards. Simply, when the total value of cards in a hand equals or exceeds 10, the tens digit is dropped. For example, a hand consisting of 2 and 3 is worth 5 (2 + 3 = 5).

A hand consisting of 6 and 7 is worth 3 (6 + 7 = 13 = 3) - the first digit is dropped because the total is higher than 10).

A hand consisting of 4 and 6 is worth zero, or Baccarat (4 + 6 = 0).

The highest score that can be achieved is 9.

The name "Baccarat" is unusual in that the game is named after the worst hand, worth 0 (or 'Baccarat').
